Acrylic is a quality plastic material that is commonly used in the sign business because it provides a transparent look of glass with the durability of plastic. It is perfect for large format printing. Acrylic also provides an excellent surface for vivid images, etching, multiple dimensions, and perfect Pantone color matches. To achieve a truly custom look, you can also use backlighting or spotlights. Choose different colors and levels of transparency in the material. Acrylic is perfect for both indoor and outdoor installations. There are also other benefits, including a much lighter weight than most materials with comparable qualities. The pliability of acrylic allows for complete versatility for customized sizing, layered signs with multiple dimensions, colorful graphics, and relatively simple installations.

Acrylic is durable and weather resistant, outperforming other materials to last significantly longer than wood, metal or glass when installed outside. That makes it a smart investment and a wise choice for exterior signage that will look good for a long time, even when exposed to the elements year-round. For indoor wall signage, acrylic is easy to hang. It adds a classy update to retail or office space, turning interior walls into brand ambassadors and setting a professional and consistent tone. Lifestyle brands, boutique clothing stores, and restaurants often set the mood for fun, romance or other brand positions with large scale photographs printed on acrylic and attached to walls. Most importantly, the price point for acrylic makes it possible for everyone, including new businesses, start-ups and franchises with multiple locations, to invest in long-lasting signage that makes a positive first impression and keeps costs down.

Acrylic is a polymer material that looks and feels just like glass—but without the heavy weight. If it’s accidentally dropped or hit by something, it won’t shatter into a million little pieces as a typical glass sign would. Acrylic is made out of a cast polymer and is colorless, durable, and transparent. It can be used as a stand-alone option or included on other signage to create a highly customized look. It’s most often used as a substitute to frosted glass due to the full range of customization and finishing options.

By adding a solid background color behind the acrylic sign, you can create a stunning 3D effect. A thin, outside border can be added to the edges of the sign to help keep the eyes focused on the text inside. This option works great for wayfinding signage located in the lobbies of big buildings. If your office has bright fluorescent lights that give off a glare, you can add a non-glare finishing to the acrylic sign, which will absorb the light instead of reflecting it. This makes it much easier to read. By using custom colors on both the front and back of the sign, you can create an interesting visual effect that will be sure to capture the attention of people walking by.

Once the design is finalized, the piece is then cut to a custom size. This allows it to work exceptionally well with large format printers due to the available sizes from the factory. If your sign is to reside in a high-traffic area, you can add a layer of protection by printing your logo or design on the back of a transparent piece of acrylic. This way, if something were to scratch or bump into it, the design won’t be damaged. Frosted glass is trendy in modern offices, but it is expensive, heavy, and very fragile. You can achieve the same look and effect by opting for a frosted piece of acrylic. LED lights can be added to the background to create a visually stunning piece.

Due to its relative light weight when compared to glass, you can install an acrylic sign almost anywhere. If you want to add it to the outside of a building, UV-resistant inks will help protect it from the harsh rays of the sun. A cable display system will allow you to mount it on the wall or suspend it in the air. The thin but strong wires that attach to the sides are almost invisible to the naked eye thereby making the sign look as if it were floating in midair. Chrome, brushed metal, and nickel-plated standoffs or offsets are most often used to secure an acrylic sign to a wall. This offers a slight 3D effect as a small drop shadow is cast upon the wall as the interior light shines through it.

All signage materials have downsides, even when they are as versatile and durable as acrylic. For example, acrylic signs may scratch more easily than comparable glass options, although it is actually easier to restore acrylic than glass by polishing – sandpaper or other rough materials should never be used to treat damage to acrylic signs. Acrylics can also be stained easily by oil and grease. Again, however, these can be cleaned easily using water and a mild detergent without causing damage to the acrylic itself. As an alternative to glass, acrylic is certainly more expensive upfront, yet it is a durable solution for the long-term when you’re looking at any type of sign, whether you’re installing internal office door signs or outdoor retail signage.
